Bandhavgarh National Park in Madhya Pradesh has the highest density of Bengal tigers in the world — 165+ tigers across 1,536 sq km. But timing your visit correctly is the difference between a life-changing tiger sighting and an empty forest. Here is everything you need to know, month by month.
Bandhavgarh Safari Season Overview
Bandhavgarh is open from October to June. The park closes entirely from July to September during the monsoon. Within the open season, there are three distinct phases — each offering a very different experience.

October — The Park Reopens
October marks the reopening of Bandhavgarh after the monsoon. The forest is lush and green, waterholes are full, and the tigers are well-fed and relaxed. Sightings are good but not as concentrated as later in the season. This is an excellent time for birdwatching — over 250 species are active. Crowd levels are low, making it ideal for a peaceful, unhurried jungle safari.
November to February — Peak Tiger Safari Season
This is the most popular window for a tiger safari in Bandhavgarh. Temperatures are comfortable (8–28°C), the vegetation begins to thin as the dry season sets in, and tigers become easier to spot. December and January are particularly good for photography — the golden morning light, cool air, and active tigers make for extraordinary sightings. Book well in advance as permits sell out quickly during this period.
Why February is Special
February is when tigresses with cubs are most frequently seen. The cubs born in the previous year are now 6–8 months old and increasingly visible. APE naturalists consider February one of the most rewarding months for families and photographers alike.
March to May — The Best Tiger Sighting Months
Counterintuitively, March to May — the hottest months — produce the highest tiger sighting rates in Bandhavgarh. As temperatures climb above 40°C, waterholes become the only source of water. Tigers visit predictably, often multiple times a day. The vegetation is sparse, visibility is excellent, and sightings can last 30–60 minutes. If your sole goal is to see a tiger, come in April or May.
- Tigers visit waterholes 2–4 times daily in peak summer
- Vegetation is at its thinnest — maximum visibility
- Sightings often last 30–60 minutes as tigers rest near water
- Sloth bears, wild dogs and gaur also concentrate near water
- Early morning safaris (5:30am) are essential to beat the heat
Which Zone to Book in Bandhavgarh
Bandhavgarh has three main safari zones: Tala, Magadhi, and Khitauli. Tala zone is the most productive for tiger sightings and is where APE focuses its safaris. It covers the historic Bandhavgarh Fort area and has the highest tiger density. Magadhi is excellent for leopards and sloth bears. Khitauli is quieter and good for birding.
APE Expert Tips for Bandhavgarh
- Always book the morning safari — tigers are most active between 6am and 10am
- Stay a minimum of 3 nights to maximise sighting probability
- Request Tala zone specifically when booking through APE
- Bring a 400mm+ lens for photography — tigers can be 30–50m away
- Silence in the vehicle is the single most important factor for close sightings
- Listen for alarm calls from deer and langurs — they always announce a tiger
